New comedy-drama Jacob’s Stepladder to premiere at Jerusalem’s Khan Theater

Jacob’s Stepladder, a new comedy-drama by American-Israeli playwright Art Feinglass, will premiere at Jerusalem’s Khan Theater from June 16-18.

The play follows a Jewish father who is left to raise his daughter alone after her mother abandons the family. Spanning 20 years, it explores what parents pass on to their children, what they cannot let go of, and what Jewish identity means even to an atheist when life begins to fall apart.

Feinglass’s previous plays include Mississippi Summer, about the role of Jews in the American civil rights movement of the 1960s, and Arrivals, about Ashkenazi and Mizrahi immigrants trying to build new lives. Both have been performed off-Broadway in New York. Jacob’s Stepladder draws on his own experiences as a single father.

Feinglass moved to Israel in 1968, lived on Kibbutz Lahav in the Negev, studied at Ben-Gurion University, and served in the IDF during the Yom Kippur War.

Based in Seattle and New York, he spends part of each year in Jerusalem, where he is artistic director of Crossroads Theater Shed.

Tickets are available through the Khan Theater.
