Scent of chocolate appears to increase muscular endurance in men without increasing perceived effort, according to a recent experimental study. Participants who inhaled the aroma of chocolate completed more leg extension repetitions than when the scent was absent, while reporting a similar level of exertion. The effect was most pronounced with the aroma of dark chocolate.
The research team observed that the olfactory cue did not change how hard the exercise felt to those taking part, even though output rose. Tests focused on repetitions of a single resistance exercise—leg extensions—rather than a full training programme, and the reported outcome was an increase in completed repetitions under the influence of the chocolate scent.
Authors of the study suggest the mechanism may relate to how familiar food-related smells prime the brain. By triggering anticipatory responses tied to eating, aromas can influence appetite and motivation pathways that in turn may alter behaviour during short bouts of physical effort. The observation that a stronger, more distinct scent such as dark chocolate produced the largest effect supports the idea that familiarity and intensity of an aroma matter.
The findings open questions about possible applications and limits. If replicated, sensory cues could inform strategies around pre-exercise routines, appetite control, or adherence to training, but the generalisability beyond the tested group, to other exercises, to women, and to longer-term training remains to be established. Further work will be needed to determine how robust the effect is across different contexts and whether it can be meaningfully harnessed in practice.
